The ski mountaineering race in Crete has become a landmark event for skiing on our island over the past decade. This race has managed to make skiing in Crete known across almost all of Europe, as shown by the large number of international participants in nearly every event.
Another reason for its success is thatit is a celebration rather than a purely competitive race —a group gathering of ski mountaineers on the southernmost mountain of Europe.
The race includes two categories, A and B, with the second covering a greater distance and elevation gain and havingits own separate ranking. It usually starts from the “Lakkos Mygerou” area in Mylopotamos and takes place on the first weekend of March.The highlight of the event is the closing ceremony held in a local taverna, with authentic local food, plenty of wine,and dancing until the morning.
